 A building envelope or building enclosure is the physical separator between the conditioned and unconditioned environment of a building including the resistance to heat, air, water, moisture, light, and noise transfer.    

The many functions of the building envelope can be separated into three categories:[3]

• Support (to resist and transfer structural and dynamic loads)
• Control (the flow of matter and energy of all types)
• Finish (to meet desired aesthetics on the inside and outside)

The control function is at the core of good performance, and in practice focuses, in order of importance, on rain control, air control, heat control, and vapor control.

Dr. Duncan is a seasoned professional with nearly three decades of expertise in technical marketing, building science, and product/business development, particularly within the construction industry.  His credentials include:

Rick applies his extensive academic knowledge to practical projects. As an ex-engineering professor, he uses his background to demystify complex building envelope issues, offering tailored, clear, and effective solutions for construction and design experts. His dedication to the industry's progress is also demonstrated by his fifteen-year tenure as the former Executive and Technical Director of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, where he oversaw operations and spearheaded technical initiatives. 

Before joining SPFA, Rick was the Director of New Product Development for CertainTeed/Saint-Gobain insulation for over ten years.

With his strategic leadership and commitment to innovation, Rick makes a significant impact on the development of materials and methods in the building insulation market, making a lasting impression on the field.
